On April 20, 1963, twenty-two-year-old Raymond Thompson "Tim" Lamphere died after a shooting inside a residence in Endicott, New York. Police responded. A prosecutor became involved. Newspapers reported the case. A grand jury considered the evidence.

Yet the surviving death certificate was never completed with a final classification of accident, suicide, or homicide.

Decades later, Dr. Mozelle Martin began reconstructing the case after promising Tim's surviving brother that his story would not disappear. What remained was not a complete investigative file but a fractured documentary trail: certified vital records, contemporary newspaper coverage, agency correspondence, public records, family-source material, and the absence of records that should once have existed.

Investigation Pending examines that surviving record without pretending the missing evidence can be recreated. It separates documented fact from newspaper reporting, family recollection, inference, and unresolved allegation while asking what can still be established about the people, relationship history, shooting, firearm questions, coroner process, grand jury review, and disappearance of the original investigative records.

The book follows Tim's history from Endicott and the Homecraft Ice Cream Shoppe through years of conflict, police contact, the events immediately preceding his death, the fatal entry through a window, the shotgun discharge, and the official handling that followed. It then traces what happened to the record itself and what remains when institutional files disappear but family memory survives.

Particular attention is given to the physical questions the surviving record can no longer answer: the shotgun's loading condition, weapon control, trigger movement, muzzle distance, hand position, wound evidence, and whether the physical evidence supported the account ultimately accepted by the community.

This book does not declare a killer, overturn a grand jury decision, or present family recollection as proven evidence. It is an investigative reconstruction of an unfinished historical record and an examination of what happens when the documents needed to test an old story no longer survive.
