Reflections on Time, History, Memory, and Utopia in the School invites educators, students, and all those who inhabit the daily life of the school to recognize themselves as historical subjects. Based on a critical dialogue with Marx, E. P. Thompson, Agnes Heller, Paulo Freire, Marc Bloch, and others, Carlos Bauer problematizes the multiple conceptions of time — physical, psychological, chronological, historical, and linguistic — and their inseparable relationship with the construction of historical knowledge. The book argues that the school is a battlefield of temporalities and that critical social memory, combined with utopia as a horizon of transformation, can break with the alienating reproduction imposed by capitalism. More than answers, the book offers restlessness, pathways toward the humanization of history, and the reinvention of educational praxis.
