Matej Čurko also searched online for vulnerable people, but an intended victim contacted authorities and helped lead police toward a man already connected to horrifying discoveries.

Karl Denke concealed his crimes behind the respectable identity of Papa Denke, while Joachim Kroll preyed upon victims across Germany for years. Joe Metheny became infamous for claims that he mixed human remains with meat sold to unsuspecting customers, although the most sensational portions of his story remain difficult to prove. Nikolai Dzhumagaliev, recognizable by the metal teeth that inspired his nickname, combined serial murder with cannibalistic acts and terrifying delusions.

Leonarda Cianciulli transformed murder into a grotesque domestic ritual, disposing of victims through caustic chemicals and claiming to have incorporated human remains into soap and cakes. Nathaniel Bar-Jonah was convicted of brutal crimes against children and suspected of far worse, but allegations of murder and cannibalism were never conclusively established in court.

Other cases expand the meaning of the taboo. Ratu Udre Udre became part of Fijian history and legend through stories of an extraordinary number of victims. Alexander Pearce resorted to cannibalism during desperate escapes through the wilderness of Van Diemen’s Land. Sada Abe’s erotic murder and possession of her lover’s remains became a national obsession in Japan, while performance artist Rick Gibson deliberately challenged legal, ethical, and cultural boundaries by publicly consuming donated human tissue.

The collection also examines Alexander Pearce, Oleg Kuzyk, Hadden Clark, Stephen Griffiths, and other offenders whose crimes became inseparable from rumors, confessions, chosen identities, and shocking headlines.
