Harmonic minor has seven modes. This is the book of the chords they make. Phrygian dominant, the fifth mode of harmonic minor, puts a major chord a semitone above its own major root: E and F, A and Bb. Those two shapes are most of what flamenco sounds like, and a good deal of metal. That is a fact about chords, and a scale chart cannot show it. So every chapter here is one key of one mode, as a grid: every triad the mode makes, drawn once at the fret it starts on, as a shape you can play. Read down a column for one chord all over the neck; a rule in the margin marks the frets one hand covers from a place where the whole mode is within reach. There are 73 such places across the book. Six modes, seven keys apiece The keys are chosen, not inherited. Every chord is spelled correctly, and in some keys correctly means E#dim — right, and indistinguishable from a typo. Each mode takes the seven keys that spell cleanest, so this book prints five such names where a fixed key order would print eighteen. Every shape is real. Each one was found by a search that checks it against a real hand — four frets, no finger asked to be in two places. Nothing in this book works only on paper. 2,430 chord diagrams.
